History
After posting the second-worst record in franchise history in 2010–11, the Cavaliers used their first-round pick in a future draft, acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers, to trade Mo Williams for Baron Davis. Cleveland had a high chance of acquiring an early pick in the draft lottery, and with a 22.7% chance of winning the first overall pick. The Clippers originally held the pick, while the Cavaliers received their own pick with the fourth overall pick. The team selected Duke University point guard Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick. The fourth overall pick in the draft was Texas power forward Tristan Thompson.
Cleveland spent the next season building a team around two potential talents selected in the draft. In exchange for power forward J. J. Hickson, the Cavaliers received small forward Omri Casspi and a protected first-round pick in the following draft from the Sacramento Kings. At the next deadline, the team acquired a first-round pick and forward Luke Walton. The Cavaliers finished the lockout-shortened 2011–12 season with an improved record of 21–45. Kyrie Irving was named Rookie of the Year and a unanimous All-Rookie First Team selection. Tristan Thompson was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.
Following the shortened 2011–12 season, Cleveland received two first-round picks in the draft for the second straight year. The Cavaliers used their fourth pick to select shooting guard Dion Waiters from Syracuse and the 17th pick, acquired just before the draft by the Dallas Mavericks, to select center Tyler Zeller from North Carolina. In August 2012, Cleveland signed free agent C. J. Meisle to a veteran minimum deal. The team struggled to make the playoffs throughout the season, but were unable to achieve success, and head coach Byron Scott, who had led the team to a 64–166 record in three seasons, was fired.
